Vikings Attempt to Take Control of the North

Chad Greenway and Robert Blanton,

The Minnesota Vikings are on a five game winning streak. You read that correctly, your Minnesota Vikings have won five games in a row. Seems like the bye week came at a perfect time for Mike Zimmer and his bunch. The team is looking to extend that streak to six this Sunday, when the Green Bay Packers come to town.

The border battle has favored the Packers in recent history, they have a 9-1-1 record when facing the Vikings since 2010. But these aren’t the same Green Bay Packers the Vikings are used to playing. Though they started the season 6-0, the Packers have lost three straight games including a HOME GAME against the DETROIT LIONS. Even though the Lions did everything in their power to find a way to lose the game last Sunday, they still managed to pull off a victory.

Aaron Rodgers has struggled to get into rhythm with his wide receivers this season.  In the last three games Aaron Rodgers has a completed only 56.5% of his passes(PFF). With Rodgers struggling the Green Bay Defense is not picking up the slack allowing 28 points per game in the last three games.

Defensively, the Vikings are one of the best units in the NFL. Mike Zimmer came and transitioned the Vikings defense from a joke to a feisty, aggressive bunch in less than two years. The Vikings are second in the NFL in points allowed this season, only allowing 17.1 PPG thus far(ESPN). The beauty of it is that every week it seems to be a different player that steps in and makes a big play for the team.

Now the Vikings find themselves with a 7-2 record looking to take a firm lead in the NFC North title race.  If the Vikings win this game they will have a two game lead on the former division champions. The Packers are reeling and the national media has been down on them all week, questioning Aaron Rodgers, and Mike McCarthy’s ability to turn this season around. This could be a game that wakes the sleeping giants, and in most cases I firmly believe that could happen.

But this season is not a normal season, this is a season where the Vikings have shown to be one of the most disciplined and prepared teams in the NFL. This is a season that most analysts are actually picking the Vikings to win this game. And it is because the Vikings at this point of the season are the better football team. This game isn’t one where the Vikings head into hoping they get every break possible to be able to have a chance to beat the Packers, this is a game in which if the Vikings just do what they have been doing all season long, they will win. They need to run the ball, control the clock, play the field position battle, and play sound defense.

If the Vikings want to be considered one of the top teams in the NFC, they need to win this game at home against the Packers, that will really open the eyes of everyone in the NFL.
